It is very likely that by the time you are reading this, you have already made your mind to install and try php. Before we proceed further with this tutorial, you need to decide about what you want to use php for. Confused? Don't be, i will explain you this.

There are basically three fields where you can use the power of php. They are :

  • Websites and web applications (server-side scripting)
  • Command line scripting
  • Desktop (GUI) applications

However i am assuming that you being a newbie will not like to tryout the rough and tough part first. Therefore lets begin with simple php scripting and web page coding.

For this, there are installation steps mentioned on the official php website. Here are the links,

You will need to install apache which is available at www.apache.org and if you wish to use database, get Mysql from www.mysql.com.

However, in my personal view, the best bet is go for an all-in-one third party package that has everything you need to successfully code in php.  I recommend EasyPHP. It is a small package consisting of apache, php  and mysql database. Get it from www.easyphp.org. However the tested versions are available for windows only, though in multiple languages.

After you download the easyphp package, run the setup file and follow the instructions in the set up wizard. There is no reason you would not be able to install it unless there is an exception.

Note : I have noticed that the default language of easyphp is other than English. Those who want to use the English language for the software, there is a dropdown box to select the language after the installation is complete. You can change the language from there, very easily.
